![]() ![]() In truth, dear reader, I had to put the novel down for a few days, so ashamed at my failed pretension to be literary I was.īut The Cosmopolitans is far too good to leave untouched for long. ![]() Schulman’s first novel was People in Trouble (1990), not The Cosmopolitans (2016), which is dedicated to Claudia Rankine. Those well-versed in Schulman are probably enjoying a flush of dramatic irony. ![]() I try to avoid googling and author’s bio before I finish the work, but I caved. But about 100 pages into The Cosmopolitans, the sort of insight and anxiety around race, marketing, and gentrification seemed very recent. I was proud of myself for finally getting around to the work that launched Schulman’s career as a novelist and public intellectual in 1990. I ordered The Cosmopolitans after hearing Sarah Schulman at an AWP panel with the gloriously strong and trenchant Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Many Sin City enthusiasts already own the series in original pamphlet, trade paperback, and/or deluxe slipcased volumes formats. (My personal fave within Miller’s oeuvre is the 1987 Electra Assassin, exquisitely and imaginatively drawn by Bill Sienkiewicz, but that’s another story.) And as he moved into 1991, Dark Horse granted him the independence to realize his graphically groundbreaking and perversely nasty neo-noir, Sin City. In the 1986 release of The Dark Knight Returns-the first and most revolutionary and accomplished of his famed trilogy-is a major milestone in the history of the medium. Frank Miller is most known as the bold, masterfully skilled and innovative artist on DC and Marvel titles such as Batman and Daredevil, honing his considerable skills within the tight restrictions of these corporate cash-cow characters. ![]() ![]() ![]() Gudrin made me think of Eilonwy in Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles, and Deegan is like many of Alexander's lovable rogues. The idea of a rat army reminded me of the evil hordes in Brian Jacques' Redwall books, though Redwall's horde leaders have much more distinct personalities. The urge to compare this book to the other YA fantasy stories I know is irresistible. ![]() So he lets Jason in on the secret of the castle, and they arrive in Sir Simon's world just in time to face the ominous portents heralding a strange and devouring army. These authors working as a duo is pure magic. I have swooned, sighed, smiled, laughed out loud and celebrated for these characters. I have loved every page of my Wes/Jamie/Blake/Jessie journey. Each other’s happiness is all that is important and they will both do whatever it takes for the other’s dreams to come true, no matter what they might be. ![]() No matter what comes their way, though, these two will handle it. Jamie loves coaching and his team is doing fantastic. ![]() Wes’s hockey career is continuing to sky rocket. And of course, some Blake antics are included. I loved that in Epic, we even get a little more of Blake and Jess. Good Boy includes Wes and Jamie’s wedding and also Blake and Jessie’s story which was fantastic. I want to say, here, that I am so very glad I read Good Boy after Us and before Epic so I could get everything happening in order. This is the part where I’m shedding a few tears because I don’t want it to be over. My Jamie and Wes experience has come to an end. Epic is book #2.5 of the Him series by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy. ![]() |
